History and Philosophy

It was in spring 2007, a year after the University’s first courses started, that the Friends of Paris-Sorbonne Abu Dhabi association was founded. This was initiated by a group of French and Emirati people, keen to support unfailingly the development of a prestigious and extraordinary project, with regard to its impact on future generations.

Members of Friends of Paris-Sorbonne Abu Dhabi are convinced that access to higher education and culture is a primary step towards economic development and human beings well being. They truly believe in the moral duty of citizens, be they UAE nationals or expats, towards supporting projects aiming to broaden the young generations’ knowledge and to open up to them a multicultural environment. In this regard, access to studies at Paris-Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi will act as an example.

Patronage and Support

	The Friends of Paris-Sorbonne Abu Dhabi association was granted the exceptional patronage of H.H. Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces. It benefits too from the full support of the French Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates, H.E. Alain Azouaou. It also received a lot of support from numerous key figures from the educational and cultural worlds, both in France as well as in this region. It also had support from the business world, in particular from Mrs. Laurence Parisot, Head of MEDEF (Movement of the French Enterprises) and from the Abu Dhabi French Business Group and the Dubai French Business Council.

Goals and projects undertaken since 2008

	The association’s main goal is to support PSUAD’s growth in the United Arab Emirates. Its primary role consists of being an effective contributor to scholarships funding. The association aims at: searching for students internships facilitating the transition of fresh graduates to the world of work welcoming researchers supporting cultural initiatives related to PSUAD
	A summary of the activities undertaken in 2008 In October 2008, the association took part in financing scholarships for 36 students, selected by PSUAD scholarships’ committee for the academic year 2008/2009; a significant increase compared to the 4 scholarships awarded on year 1 (2007/2008). The association played a large part in all colloquia seminars, and other forms of cultural events organized by PSUAD. It also initiated numerous significant business visits to PSUAD campus aimed at getting together with PSUAD management and opening dialogue with University students.

Organization and Resources

The Friends of Paris-Sorbonne Abu Dhabi association is a non profitable organization, open to companies and individuals. As of March 31, 2009, the association executive committee consists of:

The association’s funds come from the active donors’ grants and from individual donating partners. The received funds are placed into a dedicated account with the National Bank of Abu Dhabi. Different scales apply for companies and individuals. These are set by the association and linked to different benefits.

The Association’s membership becomes effective upon both the executive committee agreement and the grants’ deposit into the association’s bank account. Monitoring the association’s bank account comes under the supervision of the General Secretary.
