Gérard Tocquer, a renowned author and global specialist in branding issues pertinent to the emerging markets and Asia, discussed the challenges of taking a brand internationally and its impact on businesses.
Open to the public, the conference highlighted the importance of learning and applying new understandings about communication styles used in various countries and diverse cultures. In the current era of globalisation, context is pivotal and cross-cultural sensitivity is viewed as an essential skill highly valued by employers specially relevant for countries such as the UAE with a diverse and multilingual society. It is become vital for students and professionals intent on pursuing a career in International Business, or branding, marketing and communications, to better understand the significance of what is culturally acceptable or appropriate.
Prof. Dr. Jean Yves de Cara, Executive Director of Paris-Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi said, “The world today is simultaneously interesting and complex from a marketing perspective and cross-cultural awareness, primarily with languages and design considerations, is paramount. The rapid globalisation of products and services has its advantages but there is also an imperative to retain national identity and culture and to be aware of the legal protection of trademarks which is a major issue of international trade negotiations. As a university located in Abu Dhabi, a progressive city in a flourishing region where Western and the Eastern cultures converge, it is even more critical to understand and appreciate the inherent differences across distinct cultures. ”
Mohamed Kayal , “As a student of Master’s degree in International Business and Languages, this conference in cross-cultural branding is a compelling topic, especially with planning marketing and media campaigns, to any company that wants to go global. There is a crucial need to strike a balance between localisation and globalisation, and this conference brought more insight about the interplay of languages and cultures and how they affect a brand’s equity in a multi-cultural society.”
Paris-Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi is devoted to support the rapid economic diversification of the country and serves as a cornerstone of Abu Dhabi’s emerging higher education strategy that is part of its Economic Vision 2030. Paris-Sorbonne Abu Dhabi academics present new Atlas on the Gulf Region 3/28/2012
Paris-Sorbonne Abu Dhabi academics present new Atlas on the Gulf Region
The atlas throws new light on regional unity and diversity through maps and significant analysis
Paris-Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi announces the unveiling of the Atlas of the Gulf Countries through a lecture entitled The Arab Gulf Behind the Stereotypes, on Sunday, 1 April 2012, 5pm at the (ADIBF2012) Abu Dhabi International Book Fair “discussion sofa”. The authors, Prof. Philippe Cadène, Professor of Geography, and Dr. Brigitte Dumortier, Head of the Department of Geography and Planning, both faculty members of Sorbonne Abu Dhabi will be present and speaking at this occasion.
Published by the Sorbonne University Press (PUPS) publishing house, and co-published by Radio France Internationale (RFI), this atlas aims to redress preconceived notions about the Gulf countries. Prompted by a lack of proper information or publications in France about this region, the atlas portrays the contemporary realities of the Gulf nations by depicting their cultural distinctiveness, complexities and contradictions as a means of understanding the region and its society. The publication renders the countries as highly diversified by not confining them as only oil producers but also as major stakeholders in the era of globalisation. Anchored by a dual heritage, Bedouin and maritime, the Gulf urban areas anticipate the “City of the Future” through various aspects. A culmination of research, analysis and interviews spanning three years, the publication of the atlas was in the frame of a research programme involving professional and technical skills of selected geographers, urban planners, political scientists, economic scientists, and legal advisors.
Prof. Dr. Jean Yves de Cara, Executive Director of Paris-Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi pointed out, “This atlas is an ideal and invaluable tool for students, teachers, urban planners, economists, geographers, and government officials to obtain a clear basis for understanding this vitally important region. This atlas will be of profound relevance to our students who are not only studying geography and urban planning but also those keen on learning more about the region that goes beyond traditional stereotypes. The Abu Dhabi International Book Fair is an excellent venue to showcase and launch this fascinating reference manual.”
Prof. Dr. Philippe Cadène, Professor of Geography, said “Today, metropolis worldwide grow at an incredible rate and the atlas helps put things in perspective of globalisation. Embodying the distinct characteristics of each country in the Gulf region, the atlas is informative and concise in examining historical heritage and development policies within an international context.”
Dr. Brigitte Dumortier, Head of the Department of Geography and Planning added “We are very pleased with the publication, after many years of research, which has revealed interesting aspects about this rich region that goes beyond the conventional prejudices. I am certain that students, scholars and anyone interested in this part of the world will find it beneficial in a way that enhances their interest and encourages them to discover more.”
Available for purchase at the Sorbonne University Press (PUPS) stand in the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair 2012, the atlas employs a comparative approach and includes substantial material including demographic, social, and economic data in a rich mix of thematic maps and text. The atlas analyses the old, complex and changing relations between the two shores of the Gulf, and explains to what extent the current dynamics induce territorial reorganisation and social change. A variety of themes are documented like population, water resources and oil, as well as development indicators such as trade, urbanisation, and education. The English version of the atlas is expected to be released later in 2012 and preparation is underway to publish an Arabic version early next year.
In addition to launching the Atlas as part of its initiatives during the Abu Dhabi Book Fair, Paris-Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi is participating in other sessions both in the Professional and Cultural Programmes. The professional one will include a round table on Effective Marketing and Expanding Markets (28 March), and on Creating Edutaining Content on the Fields of Non-Fiction (29 March), while the Cultural Programme includes a round table on Celebrating the centenary of Émile Durkheim’s Masterpiece (2 April).

Paris-Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi highlights the glory of French literature with Gallimard exhibition 2/9/2012
Paris-Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi highlights the glory of French literature with Gallimard exhibition
Gallimard: “A Century of Publishing” for the first time in the UAE
To commemorate the centenary of the honoured French publishing house, Gallimard, and in collaboration with the ‘Institut Français’, the Department of French and Comparative Literature at Paris-Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi presents an exhibition, from 8th to 20th February 2012,to highlight how literature enriches the world by showcasing important milestones of the Gallimard publishing house and the varied and vibrant literary scene in France.
Open to the public, the exhibit will be on display in the university’s atrium at its Al-Reem Island campus, and will feature 18 light panels that will illustrate the story of the origins of Gallimard and how French literature has played a significant role in French society and across the world. The panels are in French and will be accompanied by explanatory blocks in Arabic.
This exhibition portrays the story beyond the publishers’ family, by featuring a century of intellectual life filled with impressive essays. Famous French writers and literary luminaries from the 20th century published by Gallimard include André Gide, Marcel Proust, Le Clézio, Nathalie Sarraute, Jean-Paul Sartre, Albert Camus and Simone de Beauvoir. The respected publishing house also introduced legendary foreign authors such as William Faulkner, Jorge Louis Borges and Mario Vargas Llosa.
Apart from literature, Gallimard also contributed to the development of Human Sciences and witnessed great debates on contemporary ideas by publishing the works of scientists, philosophers and historians like François Jacob, Michel Foucault and Emmanuel Le Roy Ladurie. The exhibition reveals how the publisher perceived the significance of achieving diversity and innovation across several subjects including travel guide and literature for the youth.
Prof. Jean Yves de Cara, Executive Director of Paris-Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi said, “Culture cannot be defined without literature and language and Gallimard has been pivotal in adding greater magnitude to the world of literature. We are very privileged to bring this enduring publishing beacon that has enabled us all to discover many outstanding authors to this region. At Paris-Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi, our course in French and Comparative Literature is specifically designed to meet the growing cultural expectations of the region and fosters a deeper understanding about French culture by teaching students how history and literature are intertwined.”
Throughout the past year, Gallimard has been celebrated around the world and major cities like Paris, Buenos Aires and Montreal have honoured Gallimard. For over a century, literature lovers, especially French literature, are indebted to Gallimard for publishing a host of eminent writers. Gaston Gallimard, the son of an affluent family of art collectors, took over the acclaimed Nouvelle Revue française from his friend André Gide to set up a publishing house that eventually evolved to be a prestigious enterprise that remained independent and influential with more Nobel and Goncourt Prize winners than any other French publisher.
Paris-Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi is committed to Abu Dhabi’s 2030 vision of establishing the emirate as a cultural hub and is an agent to accomplish this vision. Paris-Sorbonne University (Paris IV) is ranked among the top 20 universities in the world for Arts and Humanities and it emphasises the importance of culture, humanities and social sciences in dynamic and competitive knowledge-based society. Paris-Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi has a specifically created course on French and Comparative Literature which are flagship specialisations focusing on French heritage, its masterpieces and critical reviews as well as studying the relationship of literature between different cultures and languages. To evoke interest and nurture the local cultural scene, Sorbonne Abu Dhabi hosts various cultural events to enhance the academic experience of its students.
Institut Français des Emirats Arabes Unis is a branch office of Institut Français, the new agency in charge of the promotion of French culture abroad, under the supervision of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In the UAE, Institut Français des Emirats Arabes Unis was formally established on 1 January 2012 as the successor office to the Office for Cooperation and Cultural Affairs of the Embassy; it falls under the French Embassy, where its offices are located.
Institut Français des Emirats Arabes Unis is a government entity, whose main missions are:
- to promote the French language, including through the organisation in the UAE of the French government-accredited exam of French language for foreigners "DELF";
- to promote French culture in all its forms, including, but not limited to, organising cultural events and public conferences, encouraging cultural and artistic exchanges and sponsoring third parties;
- to foster higher education partnerships between France and the UAE and to promote students' mobility towards France, through its "CampusFrance" offices in Abu Dhabi and Dubai.
Over the last few years, the UAE launched several tangible initiatives to develop and elevate literature and this is clearly apparent from the recent several publishing aids granted together with various Book Fairs held throughout the nation. Paris-Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi will participate in the forthcoming Abu Dhabi International Book Fair scheduled to be held from 28th March to 2nd April 2012 and will organise a one day seminar on 27th March 2012 emphasising jobs in publishing, paving the way to its new Master of Publishing, Information and Multimedia.

Sorbonne Abu Dhabi first local university attending IRENA’s Second Assembly 1/17/2012
Sorbonne Abu Dhabi first local university attending IRENA’s Second Assembly
Students from the Paris-Sorbonne University in Abu Dhabi obtained a remarkable first-hand insight into the world of renewable energy when they participated for the first time as observers to the recently concluded IRENA Second Assembly on the 14th and 15th January, 2012. More than 200 delegations composed of over seven hundred delegates from close to 150 countries attended the second session of the Assembly.
The students learned all about the role of IRENA – the first international governmental organisation headquartered in the UAE – and enhanced their understanding of the various factors and policies governing sustainable energy and natural resources worldwide as they listened to the multilateral debates between the delegates.
IRENA – the International Renewable Energy Agency – is an intergovernmental organisation dedicated to renewable energy. IRENA’s objective is to promote the widespread and increased adoption and the sustainable use of all forms of energy produced from renewable sources in a sustainable manner, including bioenergy, geothermal energy, hydropower, ocean, solar and wind energy.
The participation of the Sorbonne students in the Agency’s Second Assembly is particularly significant as it enhances the academic value of courses at Paris-Sorbonne Abu Dhabi, as well as deepening the students’ understanding of the principles and mechanisms of IRENA.
The students are enrolled in the International Law, Diplomacy and International Relations Master programme, which includes a focus on International Environmental Law and Energy. It also offers students the chance to pursue a course on Sustainable Development Law, either in the second year of their Master’s, or as a separate diploma.
Prof. Dr. Jean Yves de Cara, Executive Director of Paris-Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi said: “We are very grateful to IRENA for allowing our students to attain a direct insight and overview of the current state of policies, initiatives, technologies and developments related to sustainable energy and the environment. It is essential to engage students in their future and our objective is to expose them to the international policy-making process and to mold them into future leaders. As well as adding a deeper dimension to their academic courses, this confirms the university’s objective to intensify its efforts to collaborate with other important entities.”
Loulo Al Dhaheri, one of the observing students commented: “observing representatives of state members interact and exchange on technical issues as well as strategic and programmatic activities taken by IRENA was a valuable learning experience. We could better understand functions such as organisation of work and budget adoption, priorities and initiatives discussion to include in the annual report or settings of policies and regulations. Being the first local university attending this Assembly, I feel fortunate as a Paris-Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi student to engage in such an exceptional opportunity”.
In December last year, Sorbonne students from both the International Law, Diplomacy and International Relations and Urban and Regional Planning Master’s Programmes visited IRENA headquarters, where they were given a presentation by IRENA officials involved in the strategic and programmatic deployment of renewable energies.
Paris-Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi, which is globally-renowned for its level of rigorous and critical thinking, works with universities and organisations in the UAE to bridge gaps between academic institutions and the private and public sector and help students make the transition from university to their professional life. Sorbonne Abu Dhabi provides world-class French education in the UAE and is an integral part of the Abu Dhabi vision to create a knowledge-based economy.
