Expand your cultural horizons with the Italian language course

The Department of Applied Foreign Languages of Paris-Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi, in collaboration with the Embassy of Italy to the UAE, Abu Dhabi has launched Italian language courses, from beginner to advanced levels. Sorbonne Abu Dhabi is the first academic institution to offer Italian courses in the U.A.E.

Every year, approximately half a million students all over the world attend Italian language classes outside Italy. Learning Italian makes communicating with Italians more pleasurable and travelling to Italy more memorable.

Knowing Italian opens windows to a wealth of literary and cultural heritage. Learning Italian offers a superior grasp about European history, the humanistic scientific value texts, theatre, literature, and more. Italy has significantly contributed to art, cuisine, fashion, movies and music and this continues to draw people worldwide to its classical and contemporary culture.

Studying Italian has an added commercial advantage for people involved in finance, business and trade including managers, investors, technicians and others whose job profile requires them to interact with numerous Italian industries and craftsmanship. You will gain cultural competence
enabling you to work more efficiently in the global marketplace.

Course objectives

Held at the Paris-Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi campus, the Italian language course aims at developing your written and oral communication skills while simultaneously offering a cultural insight. A major component of this course is the discovery of the different facets of the Italian social and cultural life. Our classes involve a diverse mix of students from different nationalities that creates a stimulating environment.

This course is organised on levels established by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages of the Council of Europe and these are taught by native teachers, trained in teaching Italian as a foreign language.

Levels
Group 1: Level A1 (first level) is for beginners
You will be introduced to Italian in a vibrant manner, gaining proficiency in basic reading and speaking skills.

Group 2: Mixed levels A2
You will continue to explore the language and enhance your vocabulary. This level places emphasis on pronunciation, grammar, verb conjugation and tenses.

Specialised teaching

Our instructors have been carefully chosen to teach students to develop specific verbal and written language skills for effective communication and are trained to help students comprehend and absorb Italian culture.

Location – Paris-Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi campus

Upon registration, students will be given student card and visitor cards issued by the PSUAD admissions department, giving them access to the campus and dedicated classrooms.

Course dates

Classes will commence on Monday, 14 April 2014 until Wednesday, 9 July 2014 will be held twice a week, on Mondays and Wednesdays (Sunday, May 25 to replace Monday, May 26).

The duration of each class is 2 hours (6-8pm) subject to changes based on availability of students and teachers.

Each level will comprise 13 weeks of classes and students are required to complete 52 hours (4 hours every week) to move to the next level.

On the first day of the class – Monday, 14 April 2014, students are invited to meet at the university reception to network and meet teachers and other students.

Study materials

The study material requires manuals for different groups:

Mixed Group A2/B1 Manual: Balì, Ziglio, 2007, Espresso 2, +Cd audio, ISBN: 8886440375, Alma Edizioni: Firenze, pp.: 256

The price for the manuals is AED 200 (not included in the registration fee) and the manuals can be ordered from the Paris-Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi Finance department. Until the manuals are obtained, teachers and students will use photocopied handouts.

Admissions assessment

For non-beginners, there will be written and oral tests on 14 April 2014 from 4 to 6 pm in Lab 4.0007. These tests will be assessed by the teachers and accordingly students will receive a formal invitation at the time of registration.

There will be a fee of AED 50 for this test, included in the registration fees..

Evaluation

There will be a mandatory written exam for all students to receive a certificate from PSUAD. The required average must be at least 10/20 in the final exam (based on the French grading system).

Optional: Students also have the option of obtaining a certificate from PLIDA (Progetto Lingua Italiana Dante Alighieri) based on passing the language exam held at the Dante Alighieri Institute in Dubai. It is the responsibility of the students to register and take this exam themselves.

Fees

For attending all classes (52 hours) the cost will be AED 3,400 per person.

Discounts are applicable for students and on groups of 4 people or more:

  • Students: AED 2,600 per student;
  • Groups: AED 2,600 per person in groups of 4-5 people:
    AED 2,340 per person in groups of 6 or more people

There is an additional discount for referrals, please enquire within. Please note that fees are to be paid in full upon registration.
