International tourists today number in the billions, making tourism a major economic activity that influences other production sectors. However, it is clear that this ‘international tourism market’ remains very unequally distributed with a very high concentration in a small number of countries.
Some of these countries are in the Middle East, a fewof which have enjoyed great success thanks to their strategies of focusing equally on aviation and international tourism. Indeed, the UAE (particularly Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah), Qatar and Turkey have, within a few years, emerged as leaders in international aviation. They are also behind a new international specialisation founded on the complementary sectors of aviation and international tourism.
François Vellas is Professor of International Economy at Université Toulouse 1 Capitole, and Director of Ethical Tourism and Development at Acting for Life. Mr. Vellas is the author of numerous reference works on tourism economy and tourism marketing as well as international trade. He will analyse and highlight the deep-seated transformations in the global tourism industry today, in a lecture entitled: New Trends inGlobal Tourism.
