The good thing about attending one of the world-class Abu Dhabi universities is that students come from all over the world. The bad thing about attending one of the world-class Abu Dhabi universities is that it can make the campus feel a bit lonely and intimidating at first. However, everyone is in the same boat and feels awkward or nervous when they first get there. The only difference is that some people hide it better.  By following these 4 simple steps you’ll have as many friends as you can handle!

1. Be brave and branch out – Join activities, clubs, events or even volunteer. Being a member of a club is a great way to get to know people on an ongoing basis, and it takes the pressure off becoming friends the first time you meet. Even if you don’t think you’ll be very good at the activity, make and effort and join in for a bit to see whether you click with the other people there.

2. Become a party person – Paris-Sarbonne Abu-Dhabi, like every university in the UAE, has many social and cultural events and parties. To start out, go to as many as you can manage, even if you go alone. A lot of people will be there by themselves, and it will be easy to start a conversation with someone who also came solo. Not much going on one week? Throw a small get-together in your own room, and invite your neighbours to come and hang out and have snacks.

3. Click and connect – When you meet someone that you like, make sure to add them on social media to stay in touch. This gives you more opportunities to interact with them, even if you don’t see them that often. You can also find out what events and activities they are doing, and invite yourself along!

4. Make the first move – if you see someone who seems interesting, fun, or lively, go ahead and simply say ‘hi’ and introduce yourself. Want a shortcut? Become friends with someone more outgoing than you. They will do a lot of the hard work and you can meet new people together. And when they get invited to gatherings, and you can tag along and meet even more people.

Don’t forget- you’re surrounded by thousands of like-minded people who’ve travelled thousands of kilometres to study at a university in the UAE. Make the most of your first year and you’ll make friends for life!
