700 students. 70 countries. One of the most famous universities in the world in one of the most awe-inspiring cities in the world. Classes, activities, students, teachers, on-campus housing, trips, subjects, lectures, and so much more. If you’re not careful it’s easy to get overwhelmed and get lost in it all. Never fear: follow these tips and by the end of your sophomore year of university, you will have it all down.
- 1. Figure out a plan for when to study.
Yes, study. That’s what you’re here for, remember? With all that’s going on, you can forget that you have to hit the books. Find what time of day is best for you. Morning person? Get up with the birds and get time in before classes. Night person? Nap after classes and study like a vampire in the middle of the night.
- 2. Make friends early. And often.
Do activities where you can get to know other college sophomores who are like you. And make sure to get to know people from other classes, too! They can tell you what to expect, who the toughest professors are, and give you secrets that make life easier.
- 3. Keep the internet, social media, and Skype under control.
The first year can be tough, if you’re far away from home. It’s tempting to spend hours every day messaging or Skyping friends and family that you left behind. But don’t. Too much time keeping up with friends back home can mean that your new life at university passes you by. Set a limit to how often you contact them, and never pass up a chance to make new friends in order to stay in touch with old ones.
- 4. Discover all that Abu Dhabi has to offer.
From museums to cafes to boat rides and stunning architecture, Abu Dhabi has it all. If you’re not from the Emirates, there’s a whole undiscovered world at your feet. Don’t be afraid to venture out on your own- you might even meet students at the other world-class universities in the UAE.
- 5. Don’t get overwhelmed.
Sometimes it can feel like things are spinning out of control. There are so many possibilities that it’s easy to go into your shell, and decide that you just don’t want to play anymore. Find time to yourself, focus on doing things that you love, and spend time with people that make you feel good.
Follow these tips, and by the end of your sophomore year of university you’ll be a pro!
