Know more about Jean-Pierre Melville
When he joined the Resistance, Jean-Pierre Grumbach (1917-1973) changed his name to Melville, in tribute to the writer Herman Melville. He kept this pseudonym after the war, when he became an independent filmmaker. From his personal experience as a resistant, he created a series of movies focusing on France under Occupation: Le silence de la mer (the silence of the sea) (1949), Léon Morin, Prêtre (Léon Morin, Priest) (1961) and L’armée des ombres (Army of Shadows) (1969).

American gangsters’ movies from the 40’s and the 50’s played an important role in Melville’s inspiration. He created his own « film noir » style: tragic, minimalistic and pessimistic with a specific photography effect. Bob the gambler (1956), the doulos (1963), the samouraï (1967) and the red circle (1970) are some of the most famous ones.

Although his influence was significant on the French New Wave movement, especially on the filmmaker Jean-Luc Godard, Jean-Pierre Melville never accepted to be considered as the father of this movement. Beyond borders, his style influenced Martin Scorcese, Quentin Tarantino, Michael Mann, Aki Kaurismaki, Takeshi Kitano and John Woo.
