The talk is addressed not only to scientists, but to a wider audience with a certain grasp of (and interest in) fundamental science.

Abstract

Nonlinear waves and solitons emerge in numerous branches of physics, such as physical oceanography, hydrodynamics, condensed matter physics, acoustics, and even in atomic physics, in the context of ultracold atomic Bose-Einstein condensates. They have also been used or proposed for many technological applications, e.g., in optical communications, photonics, and so on. This lecture will provide an overview of nonlinear waves and how they affect scientific thinking today.

The talk is addressed not only to scientists, but to a wider audience with a certain grasp of (and interest in) fundamental science.
