Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi organised a 2-day brain games event titled “Unpuzzling Math”

In collaboration with Luxembourg Pavilion at Expo 2020, the Department of Mathematics at University of Luxembourg and the National Research Fund of Luxembourg, Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi organised an awards ceremony and a 2-day brain games event titled “Unpuzzling Math” on campus.
The awards ceremony was held in recognition of the efforts of Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi’s Sciences and Engineering Department students in organizing “The Simplicity of Complexity” event that took place at the Luxembourg Pavilion at Expo2020.

The awards ceremony was attended by HE Robert Lauer, Luxembourg Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates, who commented “The cooperation between the Department of Mathematics of the University of Luxembourg, one of the most international universities not only in Europe but also in the world, and the Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi is a beautiful example of the potential of scientific cooperation between Luxembourg and the UAE. Events such as “Unpuzzling Math” which were held at the Luxembourg Pavilion at Expo2020 in December 2021 and is now taking place at the Sorbonne Abu Dhabi show that Mathematics can be taught and learned via a fun and playful approach accessible to all ages. A heartfelt thank you to all the persons involved in the organization and especially to the students of the Sciences and Engineering Department of Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi who contributed to its success”

On Friday, “Unpuzzling Math” event took place at campus, an event dedicated to mathematics and included a wide range of games such as Quadratis, Revolution and Involution. These games are interactive board games and games on iPads where joiners spent as little as 5 minutes and as much as 2 hours. Moreover, guests had the opportunity to participate in the Astigmath competition to win one of several prizes.

Prof Silvia Serrano, Vice Chancellor Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi commented “Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi realizes the growing importance of STEM in equipping learners with skills that help them become better at research and critical thinking, therefore, the university is keen on raising awareness of mathematics through hosting effective knowledge-based initiatives like “Unpuzzling Math” in collaboration with renowned institutions like the University of Luxembourg. The event comes in line with Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi’s efforts in engaging its students and the wider community in educational yet social events that different age groups can engage in and enjoy”

“Unpuzzling Math” is a family friendly event that promoted Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi’s students and community engagement in science. The event was open to all ages 5 years old and above and allowed family members and students to enjoy fun mathematics games and challenges. The event was not only entertaining, but also insightful as it introduced the importance of mathematics in our lives in general and its important role in problem solving.
