Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi displays its scientific project “Moons of the Solar system” during Abu Dhabi Science Festival
30 January, 2019During Abu Dhabi Science Festival this year, Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi is displaying its scientific project “Moons of the Solar system” between 31 January and 9 February 2019 on Cornish Abu Dhabi. Students enrolled in the Bachelor in Physics are participating in this festival to shed the light on a number of their studies’ applications, which contribute in the diffusion of a scientific culture among youth. The event targets children between 8 and 13 years old.
Participants will take part in interactive activities and workshops that will enable them to discover the different phases of the moon, as well as the various moons and planets of the solar system. Using the example of Galileo, they will discover how scientists observe the moons and planets. They will also investigate how telescopes operate by constructing a simple model under the supervision of scientific advisers. Finally, they will learn about the main properties of lenses, which are the main component of the telescope they create.
Dr. Valerie Le Guyon, Head of Sciences and Engineering Department at Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi said: “Abu Dhabi Science Festival is a great opportunity for our students to highlight the importance of physics and sciences through designing and setting up workshops, as well as engaging with children and showing them what physicists do. Children and teenagers will learn a lot from their visit to our booth, as they will take part of a set of activities”.
The Science and Engineering Department at Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi offers a Bachelor programme in Physics taught in English over three years. With a strong foundation in physics and mathematics, the Bachelor in Physics encourages critical thinking, problem solving and innovation. Students are prepared for further study or international careers in engineering science or in the many different fields of physics.
