A new karst modelling approach along different tectonic contacts, UNESCO (IGCP 715)
Project summary
This international research project IGCP 715, is developed and supported by UNESCO to develop a new methodology for the modeling of karstic hydrology using a large amount of geological data in a hydrological model in UAE, Oman Greece and in China. It is also the result of an international scientific collaboration and the exchange of knowledge in the domain of water generation and the formation of students.
The core aim of this project is to link structural geology, geomorphology and speleology with the hydrology modelling. The project aims to train a new generation of hydrology modeller and geoscience scientists in solving ambitious karst hydrology problems by combining field geology with high technology watershed instrumentation analysis as well as caving and hydrology modelling. This approach will ultimately address and eventually solve the major problems in karst hydrology which is the evaluation of the inter-catchments flow or the “extended” watershed. Thus, this project will have a major impact on the society for many countries, especially in those white an arid to semi-arid climate because it provides precious information on the most valuable resource on earth.
The outcomes of the project will have effects on the science of karstic hydrology modelling and the karst surface environmental management. The proposal will take place in three continents and 4 different tectonic contacts. The outcomes of the proposal will be the knowledge transfer in areas where the hydrology modelling is not developed like the Sultanate of Oman and the United Arab Emirates, while it will develop a new methodology in karst hydrology modelling by utilizing large amount of geology data (faults, fold axis etc.) in physically-based hydrology model.
