Sorbonne Centre for Artificial Intelligence (SCAI)

Vision

In a national and international context of competition in artificial intelligence, SCAI brings together a strategic range of disciplines of modern artificial intelligence in the heart of Paris and in Sorbonne Université Abu Dhabi.

Context

SCAI’s goal is to contribute significantly to the excellence of interdisciplinary research and education in artificial intelligence by promoting exchanges between researchers, students and industry. In a nutshell, In Paris and in Abu Dhabi we are creating since 2019 a large unified research and teaching center with a unique approach to develop diverse, inclusive and enriched AI.

In line with the objectives of SUAD research agenda 2019, SCAI Abu Dhabi ’s principal objective is to develop chairs in Artificial Intelligence through partnerships with both French and Emirati companies.

The institute was officially launched in January 2020 with 2 industrial partners Thales and Total who inaugurated 2 research chairs in Abu Dhabi, in the presence of Jean Chambaz (ex-President of Sorbonne University and Vice Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi), and H. E. Zaki Anwar Nusseibeh (Cultural Advisor to the President of the UAE and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi).

Ambition

SCAI-Abu Dhabi plans to position itself in the medium term as a key player in artificial intelligence in the United Arab Emirates and the Middle East in general, and to promote French excellence in this field. This goal will be attained through three key actions:

  • Mobilize the established expertise in Paris (more than 200 permanent academic researchers), in addition to the Abu Dhabi team, to boost research activities in Abu Dhabi and develop new synergies
  • Foster sustainable partnerships with French and international companies in the region
  • Develop a research-based training activity of excellence and host PhD candidates

Computing Power
SCAI computer cluster

Modern artificial intelligence requires computing power to test deep-learning algorithms and deploy them over large amounts of data. Thanks to the generosity of DATA4, Ircam, Thales, and TotalEnergies, SCAI now operates a GPU cluster. It will serve the whole community, both in research and teaching.

These ultra powerful GPU computing machines allow our researchers to realize calculations in an optimal and fast way.

Technicalities of our Machine Power

  • 2 CPU AMD Rome 7742 256 cores in total
  • System memory 1 TB
  • Storage 15 TB (4x 3.84 TB)
  • 8 NVIDIA A100-SXM4-40GB cards

The cluster includes 30 machines that increase storage capacity and computational resources, 100 GPU cards and a current computing power of 1800 TFLOPS in FP32.

Specifications

DGX A100 with 8 A100-40GB SXM GPUs, for 320GB of GPU memory, 1TB of system memory, for 5 PetaFlops IA performance
