Description
This session will be held in hybrid mode. It will be in person at the Research Institute Room - Library Ground Floor and online through teams.
Le "Salon de Musique” is an invitation to immerse yourself in the enchanting world of melody, exploring various themes and topics through different musical genres from around the world. Each session will begin with a brief introduction to the day's theme, then selected musical pieces will be presented through captivating videos created especially for this event.
This session, titled Semiotics and Music: How Music Makes Meaning Across Cultures, will explore the field of musical semiotics and examine how sound functions as a form of language, one that is not spoken yet remains deeply expressive and socially meaningful.
Presented by Dr. Ivana Beveridge, Head of Programme - Marketing, Communications and Media (MCM) at Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi, the session will offer an opportunity to reflect on the powerful relationship between music, meaning, and human experience. It will explore how meaning is produced, interpreted and negotiated beyond words through music, and how listeners interpret music differently through cognitive, emotional and cultural lenses. The session will also feature active contributions from SUAD MCM students, who will reflect on musical examples from different cultures to demonstrate how music operates both as a semiotic system and as an agent of culture.
This musical experience is part of our monthly series, held every month, where participants explore and discuss various genres of music from around the world.
Participants selecting the “Online” attendee type can join via the virtual attendance link. Participants selecting the “Offline” attendee type will attend in person and are required to complete the registration form.
