How can carbon taxes become truly effective tools in the transition to a low-carbon economy?

In this recent publication, Dr. Salem Boubakri investigates the conditions under which carbon taxation can meaningfully reduce emissions. His research highlights a key insight: carbon taxes are most effective when embedded within a broader ecosystem that combines financial development and technological innovation.

Through empirical analysis, the study shows that well-developed financial systems play a crucial role in channeling investment toward green technologies, while technological progress enables firms to adapt more efficiently to environmental constraints. Together, these dynamics significantly amplify the impact of carbon pricing policies, transforming them from standalone instruments into drivers of structural economic change.

By emphasizing the complementarity between policy, finance, and innovation, this work contributes to current debates on climate governance and offers concrete guidance for designing more effective and sustainable environmental strategies.

About the researcher

Dr. Salem Boubakri is Associate Professor of Economics at Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi, where he has been teaching since 2013. He holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Paris Nanterre and obtained his Habilitation à Diriger des Recherches (HDR) from Université Grenoble Alpes.

His research spans international finance and macroeconomics, with a particular focus on financial markets, financial integration, exchange rate regimes, and, more recently, climate finance and commodity markets. He has published extensively in leading peer-reviewed journals and actively contributes to international academic debates through conferences and collaborative research initiatives. His work increasingly bridges finance and sustainability, offering valuable insights into how financial systems can support the global transition toward greener and more resilient economies.
