Abu Dhabi, UAE, 4 June 2026 - In a recent feature in Emarat Al Youm, Dr. Clio Chaveneau, Head of SAFIR (Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi for Innovation and Research) and Associate Professor of Sociology, shared her insightful perspectives on the evolving landscape of higher education. Her contributions shed light on how modern technologies are reshaping learning environments and the enduring role of universities.
"Over the next 20 years, universities will evolve significantly, but they will not lose their fundamental role. While digital technologies and artificial intelligence will continue to transform teaching, research, and administration, universities will remain essential spaces for human interaction, intellectual exchange, and critical debate.
Future universities are likely to become more flexible and personalised, combining physical campuses with digital, hybrid, and smart learning environments. Artificial intelligence will support learning and research, but it will not replace the need for in-person dialogue, mentorship, and academic communities. More than ever, the humanities and social sciences will play a key role in fostering critical thinking and ethical reflection alongside technological advancement.
In the UAE, where innovation and advanced technologies are central to national development, universities have an important responsibility to ensure that progress remains human-centred. Rather than disappearing, universities must become more interconnected, interdisciplinary, and globally engaged, while continuing to educate responsible graduates capable of shaping technology with awareness, ethics, and purpose."
