Abu Dhabi, UAE, 24 April 2026 - Professor Jean-Luc Jung, researcher at Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi, notes that each species plays a specific role within a wider network of interactions, and every absence changes the system. “Disturbances affecting cetaceans, large or small, will have cascading effects on the ecosystem. Their specific effects on corals will need to be studied and monitored.”
In a world without reefs, scientists predict the seabed would become slimy, microbe-dominated, and increasingly filled with jellyfish, which thrive in oxygen-depleted, algae-heavy waters. Our own atmosphere is tied to the health of the ocean, and a healthy sea cannot exist without functional coral reefs.
