Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi and Columbia University Launch Joint Research Collaboration

Abu Dhabi, UAE, 28 January 2026 - Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi and Columbia University have established a research collaboration framework to jointly pursue a project in decision-making and learning under uncertainty. This joint research project between the two institutions explores how humans and intelligent systems make decisions when information is incomplete.

By combining insights from neuroscience, decision theory, and artificial intelligence, the project develops a new learning framework that allows agents to reason about uncertainty, actively seek information, and adapt their decisions accordingly. Rather than simply maximizing rewards, the model captures when it is beneficial to pause, explore, and learn before acting.

Jointly led by Dr. Samuel F. Feng (SUAD / SAFIR Institute) and Dr. Jacqueline Gottlieb (Columbia University / Zuckerman Institute), the project will be validated through behavioral simulations and neural data analysis. It will deliver open-source tools, high-quality scientific publications, and the joint training of a postdoctoral researcher, reinforcing SUAD’s leadership in machine learning theory and adaptive decision-making.
