Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi (SUAD) has achieved a significant milestone by becoming an accredited centre within the NICAS (National Indoor Climbing Award Schemes) network. The University is now officially recognised as a NICAS Bouldering accredited centre and, notably, the first international university to receive NICAS Ascend accreditation. 

This achievement reflects SUAD’s ongoing commitment to wellbeing, inclusion, and student development through sport and physical activity. 

A commitment beyond accreditation 

The accreditation goes beyond formal recognition. Through close collaboration with NICAS and Access Sport, Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi has embedded inclusive practices into the delivery of climbing activities on campus. The introduction of NICAS Ascend enables structured and supportive pathways for climbers from the local People of Determination community, ensuring accessibility while recognising diverse abilities, strengths, and needs. 

People of Determination is the term used in the UAE to describe individuals with disabilities, emphasising dignity, empowerment, and capability. 

Advancing inclusive climbing in the UAE 

NICAS Ascend is designed to support inclusive participation by equipping coaches and centres to: 

• Build confidence in working with disabled and neurodivergent climbers 
• Create safe, flexible, and person-centred environments 
• Offer clear progression routes without unnecessary barriers 
• Focus on enjoyment, autonomy, and long-term engagement in sport 

Delivering the Ascend programme internationally for the first time, and within a university setting, marks an important step forward for inclusive climbing in the region. 

Education, wellbeing, and social impact 

By becoming an Ascend accredited centre, Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi reinforces its belief that inclusion is an integral part of quality education and campus life. This initiative aligns with the University’s broader mission to promote wellbeing, community engagement, and social impact through interdisciplinary and holistic approaches. 

The collaboration also demonstrates the potential of partnerships between education and sport to create meaningful and sustainable impact, setting a strong example for institutions across the region and beyond.
