15 October, 2017

In line with its strategy to support the UAE Vision 2021, Sorbonne Abu Dhabi is participating in the Abu Dhabi Ports HSE Sustainability Week that starts tomorrow and ends on the 18th of October. Two Sorbonne alumni from the Environment: Dynamics of Territories and Societies master programme are representing the university through displaying their thesis projects.

The participation of Sorbonne Abu Dhabi in the Abu Dhabi Ports HSE Sustainability Week aims to increase environmental awareness and highlights the benefits of research and technology in promoting sustainable development. Some of the research topics present are sustainability, health, safety & environment, green belt, power & water conservation, waste disposal, and protection of marine environment.

Professor Kosmas Pavlopoulos, professor and researcher of the Geography and Planning programme at Sorbonne Abu Dhabi states: “Abu Dhabi Ports gave us a great opportunity as an academic institution to take part in this very important event in order to help raise awareness, share knowledge and instill the culture of sustainability among all port users. As an Emirati university, the master and bachelor programmes we offer give our students the possibility to play an active role in a sustainable community and to be pioneers in the research field on marine and coastal environments.”

Amna Al Mansoori, an alumni from the Environment: Dynamics of Territories and Societies master programme in Sorbonne Abu Dhabi shares: “The master programme I was enrolled in helped me achieve my research because I applied many concepts learned during the courses, such as remote sensing, human impact to the environment, biodiversity and conservation, in addition to dynamic ecosystems. Today, I am working as an Assistant Scientist for Marine Habitats in the Environment Agency, and part of my job is to survey and monitor mangroves, which is directly related to my masters’ thesis research”.

Ayesha Al Hashmi, alumni from the Environment: Dynamics of Territories and Societies master programme in Sorbonne Abu Dhabi adds: “As part of my research, I identified local species of fish, invertebrates, corals as well as their associated diseases. In addition, two underwater surveys have been conducted and documented for future use. It is important to raise awareness on such hidden and fragile underwater habitats while encouraging the young Emiratis to expand their knowledge and skills in this specialized field or study”.
