Climate Action at SUAD: Leading by Example

At Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi, meaningful climate action begins within the institution. As a higher education institution, the university recognises its role in addressing the climate crisis through bold, measurable action—reducing emissions, embedding sustainability in operations, and inspiring behavioural change across the community. 



Reducing carbon footprint 

SUAD is committed to a low-carbon future. Between 2023 and 2024, the university reduced total greenhouse gas emissions by 3.64%, achieving a drop of over 220 tCO₂e. This was accomplished through: 


  • Efficient water management 
  • Minimised landfill waste 
  • Operational improvements across leased facilities 


Scope 1 and 2 emissions are monitored and managed by Mubadala/SERCO (SUAD's facility management company) as part of the facility’s operational control and reporting framework. The university continues to target Scope 3 emissions—those generated by supply chains, waste, commuting, and water use—and is mapping and measuring emissions across Scopes 1–3 to establish a 2025 baseline, set annual reduction targets aligned with the UAE Net Zero strategy, and define interim milestones.



Energy efficiency & renewable transition

Energy efficiency and the transition to renewable energy aim to reduce energy consumption and accelerate the shift to clean energy across the campus.


Steps Toward Sustainability:

  • Improve energy performance of existing buildings by retrofitting facilities by 2030, prioritizing high-consumption buildings for early upgrades.
  • Enhance cooling efficiency by optimizing air conditioning systems.
  • Accelerate solar power integration across the campus by 2030.



Waste reduction and resource circularity 

Waste management and circularity are key components of SUAD’s sustainability strategy, aiming to minimize waste, promote recycling, and move towards a circular campus economy. SUAD’s climate action plan includes cutting emissions through better waste management: 


  • A dedicated food donation initiative prevents edible surplus from going to landfill 
  • Increased recycling of plastic, paper, and aluminium 
  • Ongoing composting of food waste to reduce methane emissions 


By 2026, SUAD aims to implement comprehensive waste segregation and recycling programs across campus. By 2027, on-campus composting will be fully established and single-use plastics eliminated.
