Bio
Dorian Bianco is a Postdoctoral Fellow in Art History at Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi (2025–2027). His current research focuses on The projects, missions and realizations of Danish architects in the Gulf region from the second half of the 20th century onward.
He specialises in the history and theory of twentieth-century architecture and planning. At the intersection of intellectual history, planning theory, and welfare state studies, his recent research investigates the role of architecture and planning in development programmes. His work pays particular attention to Latin America, the economist Rexford Tugwell in Puerto Rico, and the travels, networks, and collaborations of Danish architects in the Global South, especially in the Middle East and North Africa.
Previously, his research focused on neighbourhood design and community planning in Denmark and other Nordic countries since the postwar period. He defended his PhD dissertation in June 2025, entitled The Models and the Realisations in Dense-Low Housing in Denmark (1947–1987): Building Standardisation, Neighbourhood Design and International Acculturations. This dissertation examined the dense-low housing movement (tæt-lav boligbebyggelse) between 1947 and 1988, analysing the contribution of the garden city model and processes of acculturation with vernacular architectures.
His academic activities have led him to be a visiting researcher in Denmark on two occasions, at the University of Copenhagen (Fall semester 2020) and at the University of Aarhus (Spring semester 2021). In October 2021, he co-organised the international colloquium Planning as a Welfare Project at Sorbonne University, together with his PhD supervisor, and is currently editing the proceedings. In parallel, he has regularly published in the national press and frequently collaborates with think tanks on urban planning and public policy.
Dorian Bianco holds a Master’s degree in the History of Architecture (Paris Panthéon–Sorbonne), a Master’s degree in Philosophy (Sorbonne Université), and a Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences (Université Paris Dauphine).
