Bio

Tarik Meziane is Professor at the National Museum of Natural History in Paris and Director of the BOREA laboratory — Biology of Aquatic Organisms and Ecosystems (UMR 8067) — a multi-institution unit bringing together the MNHN, the CNRS, Sorbonne Université, the IRD, and the University of the French West Indies. His training in marine ecology led him, early in his career, to long-term postdoctoral stays and collaborations in Japan (University of the Ryukyus, Okinawa) and then in Australia (Griffith University, Queensland), where he helped establish the use of fatty acids as tracers of mangrove leaf litter (MEPS, 2001 and 2004; Marine Biology, 2009). From this foundation grew a research programme he has pursued for nearly thirty years: combining fatty acids with stable isotopes of carbon and nitrogen to track the origin, fate and trophic transfer of organic matter in coastal ecosystems. He works mainly in intertropical settings — Vietnam, Brazil, the Caribbean, Mozambique, the United Arab Emirates — but his collaborations have also taken him to polar regions (Greenland, Arctic) and to freshwater systems. Recruited at the MNHN in 2005 he led the RESAQUA team from 2007 to 2018 before taking the helm of BOREA. A growing share of his work now focuses on the blue carbon stored in mangrove sediments, a key climate issue — an axis exemplified by his recent findings on how Sargassum landings reshape benthic metabolism and carbon sequestration in mangrove sediments. He has supervised about twenty PhD students from Europe, Africa, Asia and Latin America, and currently leads a research strand on the arid mangroves.
