About the conference

The Social Sciences and Humanities Student Research Conference (SSHSRC) is an annual conference organized and hosted by Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi (SUAD). Its aim is to promote undergraduate and graduate research activities in Social Sciences and Humanities. The conference will give students from all universities in the UAE the opportunity to present their original undergraduate or graduate research to a larger audience composed of researchers, scholars and policy-makers working in the area of Abu Dhabi. Students will be able to showcase their research capabilities and analytical skills to a wide audience, while engaging in scientific and policy-oriented discussions. At the end of the conference, a committee composed of faculty members from universities in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi specialized in Humanities and Social Sciences, will grant two awards: one for the best undergraduate paper delivered at the conference, one for the best graduate paper.
The conference will take place on Sunday 16 and Monday 17 January 2022.

Call for proposals

Deadline for proposals’ submission: Sunday 31 October2021 11:59 pm (UAE time)

General guidelines: All papers are to be authored and presented by individual students

The following categories of students are welcome to submit a proposal:

  • Undergraduate students in their final year of study in a university in the UAE
  • Postgraduate students currently enrolled in a Master degree programme in a university in the UAE, or those who have obtained their Master degree less than two years ago

Disciplines covered by the SSHSRC

Sociology, anthropology, political science and international relations, geography, history, literature, linguistics, law, history of art & archaeology, philosophy.

Presentation format

Undergraduate students will be given 15 minutes and Postgraduate Students 20 minutes to present their papers. The presentation will be followed by a 30 minutes discussion. Each presentation will be part of a thematic or disciplinary panel of 4 or 5 presentations, moderated by a professor.

Proposal (no more than 300 words)

Submissions are to be addressed to studentconference@sorbonne.ae.
Each submission must be titled as follow: name of the author, academic affiliation of the author, title of the paper.
The proposal should include the title of the paper, its significance for the area of study, the problems to be addressed and the objectives, its perspectives/ theoretical framework, and finally the methods and results.

Registration and Conference cost

The SSHSRC is free of charge. Participants to the conference who are travelling from outside Abu Dhabi can receive free accommodation at the student accommodation of Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi during the conference. On each day of the conference, All participants will receive free lunch at the University cafeteria. A catering service will also be available throughout the conference with refreshments.
