Bay of Angels

A young bank employee get badly influenced by the women (Jeanne Moreau) he falls in love with and become a gambling addict. Influenced by Robert Bresson’s style, the passion and mechanisms of gambling are depicted with austerity and seriousness.

Jacques Demy (1931-1990) is a French filmmaker close to the New Wave movement. He is well known for his musical movies : Les parapluies de Cherbourg (The Umbrellas of Cherbourg1964) ; Les Demoiselles de Rochefort (The young girls of Rochefort, 1967) ; Peau d’âne (Donkey Skin, 1970) ; Une chambre en ville (A Room in Town, 1982) for which he wrote the lyrics and asked compositor Michel Legrand to create the songs. La Baie des Anges (Bay of Angels) is Demy’s second movie.
