Talk, Book Exhibition and Documentary – Mathematics and Civilisation
Date: Tuesday 6 May 2025
Time: 5PM – 7PM
Language: English
Venue: SUAD Campus
We invite you to an evening of discovery, reflection, and discussion on the timeless role of mathematics in shaping the world we live in today — and the world we continue to build for tomorrow. This special event explores the deep and fascinating connections between mathematics and the development of civilizations throughout history. Through engaging talks, a documentary screening, and a curated book exhibition, participants will journey from the earliest mathematical discoveries to their powerful role in shaping modern society.
The event is designed to highlight how abstract mathematical ideas have continuously influenced human progress, from ancient navigation and architecture to contemporary digital technologies.
Key Highlights
- Presentations on the impact of mathematics across civilizations.
- A book exhibition featuring key works on the history and evolution of mathematics.
- A documentary screening showcasing mathematics’ enduring influence on human progress, followed by an open debate and interactive Q&A session.
Agenda:
- 5:00 PM – 5:05 PM: Welcome and Opening Remarks
- 5:05 PM – 5:35 PM: Talk: Mathematics and the Fabric of Civilization

Talk: Mathematics and the Fabric of Civilization
Time: 5:05 PM – 5:35 PM
Abstract
From the earliest counting systems to the algorithms powering modern life, mathematics has always been a quiet architect of human progress.
This talk explores how mathematical thought has shaped civilizations—guiding navigation, enabling architectural wonders, and now, powering the digital age.
By reflecting on both historical milestones and present-day applications, we’ll uncover the deeply human story behind numbers, patterns, and logic and how they continue to connect, structure, and enrich our world.
About the speaker
Documentary Screening
Time: 5:35 PM – 6:15 PM
Enjoy the screening of a carefully selected short documentary highlighting how mathematical concepts have influenced civilizations across history, from the ancient world to the modern digital age.
Talk: The Journey of Infinity Across Civilizations
Time: 6:15 PM – 7:00 PM
Abstract
“Mathematics is the science of the infinite. The great achievement of the Greeks was to have made the tension between the finite and the infinite fruitful for the knowledge of reality.”
— Hermann Weyl, Levels of Infinity
This talk explores the profound significance of infinity and its evolution from ancient civilizations to the modern era. From infinite processes used in ancient Indian cultures to the Ancient Greeks’ deep skepticism about infinity, and finally, to the groundbreaking developments in 19th-century Europe, the journey of infinity is one of fascination and controversy. Through a series of paradoxes, we will explore how different civilizations grappled with the infinite, shedding light on the boldest and most imaginative thinkers in the history of infinity.
About the speaker

At NYUAD, he teaches a range of courses in the Mathematics Program, as well as Infinity, a Core Curriculum course that serves as the inspiration for his talk.
