Abstract
The talk “Saleh Barakat, The Art Dealer as a Cultural and Artistic Agent in the Arab World” explores the significant role of Saleh Barakat, a prominent Lebanese gallery owner and curator, in shaping the modern art scene in the Arab world. With his expertise in Arab modern art, Barakat founded the Agial Art Gallery in 1991 and later the Saleh Barakat Gallery in Beirut, both of which have become key institutions in promoting contemporary Arab artists. His work as an art dealer is deeply informed by a rich understanding of the history of Arab artistic traditions, and he has been instrumental in fostering relationships between artists and museum institutions. Through his efforts in curating major exhibitions and building important collections, Barakat has made a lasting impact on the art world. Additionally, he has consistently contributed to the cultural landscape through his dedication to teaching and publishing, further solidifying his role as a cultural and artistic agent in the Arab world.
