About the Speaker
Krzysztof Wielicki is a Polish mountaineering legend and one of the world’s foremost high-altitude climbers. Known for his pioneering spirit, Wielicki was the fifth person to summit all fourteen of the world’s 8,000-meter peaks, with the majority of these ascents accomplished either on new routes, solo, or in the winter. He achieved the first-ever winter ascent of Mount Everest in 1980, followed by similar feats on Kangchenjunga and Lhotse, marking him as a true innovator in extreme conditions. Wielicki’s exceptional contributions to mountaineering have earned him numerous accolades, including the prestigious Piolet d’Or, often considered the “Oscar” of mountaineering. This award honors extraordinary achievements and innovation in alpine climbing, and Wielicki received it in 2019 in recognition of his lifetime of groundbreaking accomplishments. His career, marked by resilience, courage, and an unyielding drive to push boundaries in the world’s harshest environments, continues to inspire climbers around the globe.
