Dr Stéphane Desruelles
Head of the Department, Geography and Planning, Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi
Associate Professor in Physical Geography at Sorbonne University Paris since 2014 and at Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi since 2021, and head of the Department of Geography and Planning at SUAD, Dr. Stéphane Desruelles has been conducting research since 1998 in France, the Mediterranean Basin and the Middle East. These studies, developed in the field of geoarchaeology, focuses on the interactions between hydrological dynamics (marine and continental) and human settlement. It aims to better understand how human societies have in the past (i) managed the water resources and their variations, (ii) adapted to the evolution of the hydrosystem and/or the shoreline (related to sea level changes).
These studies are carried out within the framework of programs supported by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs (in Oman, the United Arab Emirates and Morocco), the French School at Athens (Cyprus) or local institutions in France. They are performed in partnership with French or foreign archaeological teams (Moroccan, American, Japanese, Italian). They have allowed him to create an already-proven partnership network, consisting of archaeological missions, French and foreign universities and laboratories, and expertise from researchers from various scientific disciplines. He has 17 publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
