Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi launches its annual cycle of conferences “Sorbonne Talking series”

In collaboration with the Institut français in the UAE and CEFAS, the French Center for Archaeology and Social Sciences in Kuwait, Sorbonne Abu Dhabi is launching seven talks as part of the new annual series “Sorbonne Talking” over the course of the academic year 2017/2018. Three talks will take place during the first semester and four will be organized in the second semester. Experts from local and French institutions will tackle a variety of contemporary topics in the fields of sciences, geography, history, sociology, philosophy, law, archeology and history of art and performing arts.

The first of three talks planned for the first semester is organized under the theme “Keeping a remote but close eye on Earth” and will take place on Wednesday 18 October 2017, at the university’s campus on Al Reem island, Abu Dhabi. Prof. Nazmi Saleous, Associate Professor of Remote Sensing and GIS & Coordinator of the M.Sc. programme in Remote Sensing & GIS in UAE University and Dr. Haïfa Ben-Romdhane, Postdoctoral researcher at the Earth Observation & Hydro-Climatology Laboratory – Research Center for Renewable Energy Mapping and Assessment (ReCREMA) in Masdar Institute of Science and Technology – a part of Khalifa University of Science & Technology; will participate in this talk.

Dr. Yann Rodier, head of History department and Assistant Professor at Sorbonne Abu Dhabi said: “The Sorbonne Talking Series cycle strengthens the academic and cultural position of Sorbonne Abu Dhabi in the UAE and the region as it offers a new framework for the academic events that the university organizes. In connection with contemporary topics, we will tackle a wide range of stimulating themes in the presence of specialist and guest speakers”.

The second talk titled “Making a museum in the 21st century: from idea to conception”, will take place on 15 November 2017 after the official opening of the Louvre Abu Dhabi. The last talk of the first semester will be devoted to “Women in Gulf Societies: representations, modernity and changes” and will take place on 6 December 2017. Each event is the result of a collaboration between Sciences and Human Sciences departments at Sorbonne Abu Dhabi, in connection with other universities, local and outside partners.
