Abstract
What does “fasting”, in Arabic sawm, really mean? And what is the meaning of ramadân, the name of the most important month in the Islamic calendar? When did the Islamic fast of ramadân originate? Does this precept apply only to Muslims or to all monotheists? Is it always obligatory? What links fasting to the Qur’anic figure of the Virgin Mary? What links it to the revelation of the Qur’an itself? And to the great Islamic virtue of patience or sabr?

The talk tries to answer these questions by proposing and discussing some significant passages taken from the textual sources of Islam, and by turning to the resources of lexicography and Qur’anic exegesis.
