Conference – Translating cultures in literature: the French language reflected by other languages

In this year dedicated to the Francophonie and as part of the Translation Week at NYUAD, we invite you to a conference focused on French language in the context of literary translation. What role does French, as either a source or target language, play in intercultural dialogues and relations? What are the editorial and marketing challenges of literary translation in France and abroad? How does archival research shed light on these challenges as well as the relationships between publishers, authors, and their translators? These questions will be addressed by our guests, including researchers, publishers, and translators, through the study of specific cases in their presentations. The sessions will be followed by discussions with the audience.

About the Speakers

Dr Hana Subhi has been teaching French as a Foreign Language and Literature at the University for many years, and since 2006 at Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi. Holder of a Ph-D in Modern Literature (Sorbonne University Paris), she has published numerous articles in French literature and translation studies. As a translator, she has also translated numerous works in literature, philosophy and sociology from French into Arabic. She is the winner of the 2014 Senghor-Ibn Khaldoun Prize, awarded by the OIF, for the translation of Edgar Morin’s book, The Humanity of Humanity.

Prof. Gustavo Guerrero is a Professor of Cultural History and Contemporary Latin American Literature at Cergy-Paris University. He also serves as a literary editor at Gallimard for the Hispanic and Lusophone world. A former student of the EHESS, he authored a dissertation in literary history and theory, under the supervision of Gérard Genette. He has published essays such as La estrategia neobarroca (Barcelone, 1988), Itinéraires (Caracas 1997), La religion du vide (Mexico, 1998), Poétique et poésie lyrique (Paris, 2001), Historia de un encargo : La Catira de Camilo José Cela (Barcelone, 2008), ), which won the International Anagrama Prize in the Humanities and Social Sciences, and Paisajes en movimiento, literatura y cambio cultural entre dos siglos (Buenos Aires, 2018). He is currently leading the research project « Médiation éditorial, diffusion et traduction de la littérature latino-américaine en France » (Editorial Mediation, Distribution and Translation of Latin American Literature in France)(MEDET LAT) at the École Normale Supérieure in Paris.

Prof. Pascale Sardin is Professor of English Literature and Translation Studies at Bordeaux Montaigne University (France), where she is co-director of the Masters in Gender Studies. She is the author of several books on Samuel Beckett, and has edited two volumes of the journal Palimpsestes (Presses de la Sorbonne nouvelle). She is currently writing a literary biography of Barbara Bray, who worked with Harold Pinter, Samuel Beckett and Joseph Losey, was a BBC radio producer and translated many of Marguerite Duras’s works into English.
