Research Interests

  • My research focuses on leveraging information (records and archives) for development, accountability and good governance. I have investigated the international, regional and national legal framework underpinning freedom of information and data protection. The advent of data driven technologies has resulted in a datafied society. In this regard, I am fascinated by topics covering contemporary issues related to surveillance capitalism, information ethics and data justice
  • My current work focuses on fostering inclusivity, trust and safeguarding privacy in data management systems. Advances in digital technologies coupled with the onset of Covid 19 pandemic in 2020 prompted many high education institutions to shift to e-learning and use of learning management systems (LMS). While the adoption of LMSs for teaching and learning is considered convenient and efficient, there are numerous legal and ethical challenges associated with their deployment
  • My latest research output highlighted the privacy, security, and copyright requirements for learning management systems, with a particular focus on the Blackboard system that is used for teaching at SUAD. The study concluded that safeguarding users’ legitimate rights is a collective responsibility between the learning management services providers and the educational institutions. It recommended educational institutions using learning management systems to craft robust data protection regimes
  • More importantly, I am involved in research aimed at improving the status of records management in the UAE. In this respect, I have co-authored the handbook on management of records in the UAE that seeks to establish the status of records management in the UAE public sector with a view of identifying the gaps and proposing ways of addressing the same. In particular, the chapter on e-records management highlights the need for adoption of a government-wide e-records management software to standardise management of e-records across the UAE public sector. However, to be effective, this transition has to be preceded by an assessment of the functional requirements and specifications for a suitable software system for e-records management. I intend to spearhead this assessment
